Word game Wordle launched publicly in October 2021 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and rapidly became a global sensation. It was created by Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle, who designed it for his crossword-loving partner as something to do together during lockdown.
Wardle later uploaded the game online so that others could play it to pass the time in lockdown. Within months of launching, Wordle went from just 90 players to more than 2 million.
It was promptly bought by The New York Times in early 2022, which hired an editor later that year to curate the game's list of a possible 2,309 five-letter words—enough to last until 2027. Wordle originally had 2,315 potential answers, but six were removed by The New York Times because they were offensive, old-fashioned or used non-American spelling.
Players must identify a five-letter word by using a process of elimination. Green tiles tell you a letter is correct, yellow tiles show a letter that appears in the word but is in the wrong spot, while a gray tile means that letter does not appear in the word at all.
According to word-finder website WordsRated, "S" is the most common starting letter, with more than 15 percent of players using this letter first. It's a good choice too, as there are 167 more words that begin with S than any other in the game—365 in total. In second place is the letter C at 8 percent, with B the third most popular choice at 7 percent.
