AN extraordinary cache of pictures have shed light on the moment Jackie Kennedy boarded Air Force One shortly after witnessing her husband's murder.

The stunned First Lady is pictured just a few hours after the 46-year-old President was assassinated in Dallas in November 22 in 1963 while travelling with her in a motorcade.

The set, which is now being auctioned, was taken at the moment vice-president Johnson was sworn in, with his wife Lady Bird at his side.

The 17 images in the album belonged to White House photographer Cecil W Stoughton.

They begin with vice-president Lyndon B Johnston and others waiting in the small 16 square foot stateroom aboard Air Force One for Jackie to arrive.

Several people can be seen comforting the newly widowed woman, who still has her murdered spouse's blood on the lower half of her clothes.

The set ends with Lady Bird smiling after her husband is inaugurated President, in what could only have been a bittersweet moment.

Only one photo was officially published by Stoughton.

That was the iconic shot capturing LBJ with his right hand raised as Jackie Kennedy gazes on.

There are closer shots on the faces of those aboard, as well as the other individuals in the room, some of whom look straight into Stoughton's camera.
